Visit Kinlochleven on the West Highland Way

Kinlochleven had its future secured when in1926 The British Aluminium Company began smelting aluminium by harnessing the power of the waters from the surrounding mountains. Once a major employer to villagers and many, many more, Kinlochleven is now a bustling village with walkers stopping over-night on their way to Fort William as they near the end of the West Highland Way.
 
Some of the mighty buildings which were formerly part of the smelting process are now two successful businesses attracting attention to themselves from all over. The Ice Factor is a huge indoor climbing centre with tuition, climbing sessions, shop and cafe. River Leven Brewery next door produces a range of cask conditioned real ales and lagers.
 
We think you would enjoy a visit to this interesting village - there's lots to see and do. There is a museum about the history of the smelting and the village which has lots of fascinating old photos. Kinlochleven has a small choice of pubs, shops and a good selection of accommodation, including a remarkable former hunting lodge perched high on a hill above the village. In 2021 and beyond there are exciting plans for the development of new outdoor facilities including watersports.

The last section of the West Highland Way climbs from sea-level in the village through the hills towards Glen Nevis and then into Fort William.
